Building Hope is proud to announce the closing of a loan of up to $5 million for Goucher Charter Academy, supporting the acquisition, renovation, and expansion of the school's permanent campus in Gaffney, South Carolina. The financing will enable the school to purchase the facility it currently leases, complete critical renovations, add modular classrooms, and expand its capacity to meet growing demand from families across Cherokee County.
Goucher Charter Academy was founded by local parents and community leaders after the closure of the former Goucher Elementary School, transforming a community challenge into an opportunity to create a new public charter school rooted in academic excellence, leadership, and service. Today, the tuition-free K-8 school has become one of South Carolina's most unique charter schools, integrating Scouting America into its educational model to foster character development, civic responsibility, and hands-on leadership opportunities for students.
Since opening its doors in the 2023-2024 school year, Goucher Charter Academy has experienced remarkable growth, increasing enrollment from 137 students to more than 320 students in just three years. Building Hope has been a trusted partner throughout that journey, first providing a startup loan to help launch the school, followed by a working capital line of credit to support early operations. This latest financing represents Building Hope's third investment in Goucher's success and marks an important milestone as the school transitions from leasing its campus to owning and improving it for future generations of students.
The approximately $6 million project includes the acquisition of the existing 15-acre campus, renovations to the former elementary school building, installation of modular classrooms, and additional site improvements. Once complete, the expanded campus will support approximately 380 students in grades K through 8, allowing Goucher to continue serving a growing rural community while positioning the school for future expansion. Plans for a second phase of improvements include additional classrooms, expanded arts spaces, and a larger gymnasium to further enhance the student experience.
